Teeth cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis or dental hygiene, is a fundamental aspect of oral care aimed at removing dental plaque from the surfaces of teeth. Dental plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums throughout the day, especially after eating and drinking. If not removed regularly, plaque can lead to various oral health issues, including cavities (dental caries), gingivitis, and periodontitis. Cavities occur when the acids produced by bacteria in plaque attack the enamel, causing it to weaken and eventually form holes or cavities in the teeth.
